Trump: Hostile regime policy leads Iran to the abyss
- 8 Hours Ago
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - US President George W. Bush rejected Iran's hostile policy towards the United States and its allies in the region, reiterating his warnings that Tehran would face "enormous power" if it tried to threaten Washington's interests in the Middle East.
Trump said Iran would face "enormous power" if it tried to do anything against the interests of the United States in the Middle East, adding that it had shown strong hostility toward Washington.
On the other hand, it seems that Tehran has chosen to calm down after the serious American threats to any hostile movements in the region, and the Iranian president expressed his desire to make the dialogue to reduce the level of tension between the two countries.
Observers said Tehran was aware of the seriousness of US threats and learned that the option of escalation would lead to a war that the regime could not resist or withstand.
Speaking to reporters as he left the White House for a Pennsylvania event, Trump said he was still ready to talk to Iran "when they are ready," but made clear that no discussions were taking place.
Trump's comments came despite appeals by Tehran that the United States treat them with respect rather than threat of war, following remarks by the US president yesterday and raised concerns about possible conflict between the two countries.
"As far as Iran is concerned, we will see what happens," Trump told reporters. "But they have shown great hostility ... they are the first instigator of terrorism."
"I think Iran will make a very serious mistake if it does anything. If it does something, it will face tremendous power, but we have no indication that it will."
Trump warned Iran's leaders not to engage in talks unless they were ready to negotiate.
But in a sign of approaching confrontation, a year after Washington pulled out of a 2015 nuclear deal with Iran and re-imposed sanctions, Tehran announced a four-fold increase in its low-enriched uranium production rate.
On the other hand, Iranian President Hassan Rowhani said he favored talks and diplomacy but did not accept them under the current circumstances. "Today's situation is unfavorable for talks and our choice is only the resistance," Rohani was quoted as saying.
