"Burnin' Down the House" by MenoReno - 8.22.19

While we sit waiting any minute for the RV to kick off, there is a terrible situation unfolding in the Amazon Rainforest.

So far, according to NASA, there have been 73000 fires ravaging the most biodiverse area on the planet. That's an 83% increase over previous rates. Millions of species are at risk.

But there's more. The Amazon is the largest carbon sink on the land. While the world oceans scrub 93% of the carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, it's not enough. And forests are next, with the Amazon being the largest scrubber.

Another problem is that as the trees absorb the CO2, they release oxygen. It is estimated that 20% of the oxygen we breath is released into the atmosphere by the Amazon.

While it's nice to think of our post RV lives, what good will it do if we don't have enough oxygen to breath. And this isn't the only area of the environment that should concern us. Antarctica and Greenland, the two largest sources of fresh water on the planet are melting at extraordinary rates, threatening rising ocean levels which put coastal regions across the world at risk of flooding.

Unfortunately, I don't see any of this turning around soon, as government policies are making things worse. For example, the Brazilian government has encouraged deforestation. And now they are blaming the private sector for the problem, as cities like Sao Paulo are engulfed in smoke from the burning rainforest.

Wish I had a solution for this monumental problem, but it's one that even RV money won't solve.
