“It’s clear, there are those who live for evil, for evil’s sake,” Gorlois told Merlin. “I do not claim to understand it, not at all. It is like a small boy who pounds on a tree with a stick; it does no good for the tree nor the stick, but only for some glee of doing it. As though destruction were the pastime of choice. Understood in children, sure, though what of those that are grown that kept the stick in hand? Why prefer evil over honor, over integrity, the human soul's clear preference? It's as though some race of beings came here from afar intent on ruling while they pillage everything, then leaving it a smoldering ruin behind them as they’re off laughing to the next world they’ll consume.”
“Well said,” Merlin replied. “It goes beyond mere cankerous greed; evil’s strategy is clearly in contempt of humanity, meant to work our ruin and take us in its fist. Adopting schemes it hopes we'll not discern.”
“What for example?” said Gorlois.
“Well . . . It can be done with money --- with an evil self-seeking twist. It begins with loaning money at interest, slowly at first, till evil is the loaning house to kings and has control of them. Wealth will be what evil wields, and war shall be its tool as evil thrives on chaos and delights in disarray in order to achieve control. That is the way the fist might close on us.”
“Where will they get the money to lend out?”
“It only takes a little at the start. Then multiplies, like eggs from hens.”
“Show me how.”
“Very well. These few pebbles shall be our first small capital. We shall be the Dark Brotherhood, you and I.”
“Dark to reflect the dire intentions we possess.”
“That’s it. We set up offices in distant cities to which many go traveling for trade. Merchants hesitate to travel with their gold, so they’ll leave it in our care, to take a letter from us instead so our distant office will return their gold to them. The amount of wealth that’s left in our coffers grows as royalty leave gold coins on deposit with us. Good so far?”
“Yes.”
“Now we’ll create something to stand for the gold coins, by proxy so to speak. Copper ones! That we mint with our exclusive stamp on them, to declare each one is proxy for a coin of gold. Paper also works, agreements to pay, letters of credit we provide. Such as that.
“We might issue the paper to the wealthy, to kings and potentates, one for one for gold, to redeem them when desired from any of our offices in far-off lands, perhaps with a verbal cue for security’s sake. This continues as gold comes flowing in. Copper coins and paper are going out. Our Dark Brotherhood expands. As time goes by we begin to distribute more paper and copper than there’s gold to back it with.”
“Is that not dangerous?”
“Not when you see how it multiplies. Soon enough with the interest coming in we can accommodate them easily. Or we sell some properties to provide the gold to them. Or better yet, create a war. Suppose the plans of our Brotherhood require a war be waged as part of our design to spread our rule. The King of Nineveh, a member of the Brotherhood, will be the one to lead the fight and needs some funds. What shall we do?”
“Loan him copper coins?”
“Yes. For him to buy arms, perhaps from our own factories, and to pay his army’s salary. Or better yet, hire men from other nations to wage his war for him. We supply him copper or letters of credit that are good as gold to those he takes them to. Which costs us next to nothing to produce!
“For our loan we require interest from him of a few per cent, to be paid in gold in advance. If he is late, a few points more will be declared. If he cannot pay us back we accept houses and property and crops instead. If he’s recalcitrant we have a more loyal king invade him to secure what’s owed to us and more, and some of the spoils the army gleans are theirs to keep.”
“Ah.”
“Gold and property flow steadily in to us! Where is our original gold? Secure beneath the growing pile of it. What were few will be many soon. Eventually no one will even think of gold, only the paper and the copper we provide to stand for them.”
“No!”
“Oh yes. But to continue the story of our enterprise: Nineveh has its war, part of an overall plan for world control and financed by loans from us. Both sides desire funds to rebuild their ravaged lands and we provide them paper credit and copper coins to do that with. Again the interest and the principle come flowing back in gold and property, many times what we loaned out. And still we have not touched our original gold coins!”
“We have created wealth!”
“And when we see how well it goes we make copper coins far in excess of whatever gold we hold. Credit will abound. The economy will boom with so many starting businesses to address the many needs of the sudden rich and people gambling on properties that rise in value overnight.”
“All are thriving. Excellent!”
“Though we have no care for people. Their prosperity is not our goal. What is?”
“Dominion.”
“Yes. Just when all are prospering so well we twist the situation to our scheme: Directing our Loaning Houses to stop making new loans and to pull in any ready to default. What will happen then?”
“The price of property will collapse as people sell to pay off loans! And businesses will fail for lack of capital.”
“Just so. And when loans are not repaid, who will acquire the properties and businesses?”
“The Brotherhood!”
“Round and round the spiral builds as the loaning work proceeds. Which is what?”
“Control.”
“How?”
“By creating wars?”
“Many fine and expensive wars! And disasters of all sorts as we learn to bend even the weather to our will. Until nearly all are borrowing from us as they proceed with building and destroying and building again. All the world shall be our debtors before long. Each cycle of wars our wealth will grow. And wars especially against . . . Can you guess?”
“Those who refuse to work with us?”
“Yes! Targeting nations reticent to accept our Central Offices, nations where divisions will suddenly appear and factions sprout that come to blows.”
“Strife that we finance!”
“Then from time to time, when gold is abundant in our hands and our copper and paper are cherished everywhere, the Brotherhood does something more creative yet.”
“What’s that?”
“A country’s Loaning House will conveniently expire. Cease to be. The copper and paper suddenly unredeemable, its value only paper and copper again.
“‘Where is our gold?’ the people will demand. ‘We owed it to such and such a king,’ they will be told, ‘for such and such a war our country fought, and it is gone.’”
“Oh my.”
“With wealth we may control dishonest men, and therefore governments. And information! What news is given out will be controlled by us. Even what is thought of it, with the commentator’s art! Soon taking thought will be a lost art anyway, when all that concerns the people is their vanity and the desire to simply stay alive, for which they must work so long they have no time for thinking’s luxury.”
“Becoming slaves!”
“The government will accept the task of charity increasingly lest the people turn to one another and be fostering community. Until one day the government is unable to provide relief as the infrastructure of society is dispelled when the government’s gold is gone and the veil of paper has been ripped away.”
“Destroying the very ones they rule?”
“A necessary chaos for control to be complete, a whirlpool into which all falls.”
“They’ll easily control the people.”
“Gorlois, they may control the world."
