As 2019 ends, many people will take stock of their accomplishments during the departing year. And upon looking into the ledger - at the longer column of yet-unattained goals - they are apt to conclude that they might have squandered away most of the year, reading Ground-Hog Day-like fairy tales in various forums. But this assessment ignores some important attainment such as wisdom gained from invaluable lessons learned during the same period.
Indeed, living in a culture where get-rich-quick schemes and reality show millionaires abound, it is difficult not to feel like a failure if you did not get that lucrative business contract, or lost the 50 pounds at year’s end. So, at the start of this New Year, millions of us will adopt resolutions calculated to recapture that which was lost in the past or those that will ameliorate our current life.
But setting new resolutions is one thing, sticking to them another. It is said that only about 5 percent of people who set New Year resolutions truly fulfill them. For these people, this yearly ritual is cause for celebration; but for the rest of us, it can lead to frustration and disappointment.
If you find yourself struggling with your resolutions or goals for the year 2020, use this ACE formula, which has worked for me in the past.
In order to be effective, your goals must be:
· Attainable – You are capable of carrying them out. That is, these goals are not outside of your capacity – even if you have to develop additional skills. For instance, if you choose to learn martial arts, do not plan on becoming Bruce Lee within 3 months; rather, choose a level of achievement that will not discourage or overwhelm you. If you have never studied Karate or Tae Kwon Do before, aim at mastering the basic postures, movements and the philosophy behind the art. And only after acquiring a strong foundation in these steps should you proceed to work toward attaining subsequent ranks, one belt at a time.
· Credible – Choose a goal you believe you can accomplish. Every goal by its very nature has a bit of unreasonableness built into it; because you are setting out to accomplish something different from what you have in the past. Nonetheless, make it only as unreasonable as you dare to ensure you believe in it. For instance, if your goal is to be at work on time each day; this may mean being there before 9:10 am. This goal becomes less burdensome if you adjust it to being there between 9 and 9:05am instead of 9am sharp, thus making your goal of being on time believable.
· Exciting – Have fun with your goals, but at the same time stretch yourself. Goals that demand your focused energy and mindfulness will encourage you to grow and learn in an exciting and positive ways. Create goals that lead to not just tangible but also intangible benefits. For example, if your goal were to master a dance step, the intangible benefit there would be the physical exercise aspect, which may lead to improved health. Make sure you are cognizant of this intangible benefit - and in every aspect of your life any attainment of a goal will bring. Be impassioned by it. This will make its attainment even more exciting thus increasing the odds of success. Vividly imagine the benefits as fully as possible; that is, experience your goal with all your fives senses as if you’ve already achieved it.
As you bring in the New Year, may you accomplish all your goals; may your resolve be strong and your bright future assured.
