What You Gave Is What You'll Keep

“There’s someone they say was hit by lightning,” Igraine told Gorlois. “Then a second time, hit by lightning twice. Died each time and came back again. Have you heard of it?”

“I have not,” said Gorlois. “Can you tell us what you know of the experience?”

The flash comes first.
swallowing what had been the world
and what was you is a sudden thousand moons
all balled into a sun inside the skin.

Then the thunder barks
and the sun retreats behind the night as the brain
turns inside-out to see what the ruckus is.

And you never quite get over it.
Dripping stars everywhere you go.

“Ah,” Gorlois said. “And you know this person?”

“I do,” Igraine grinned, “It was I myself the lightning claimed. And found again one other day.”

“You died? What is death like?”

“Do you have dreams? Death is not so different. You’re still you. Spirit is your nourishment, whatever you've received at the Well of Source. If you have learned to love, love will provide you wings. You encounter there those that you know here. And what you gave to them is what you’ll have to keep.”
