There's an interesting article at americanbanking.com about why Barclay's Bank is testing quantum computing.
They, along with JP Morgan, have been using it to research portfolio optimizations and scenario simulations. Basically, they are trying to reduce risks and enhance profit.
As quantum computing can be a billion times faster than traditional computers and more energy efficient, they expect that in 20 years all banks and most banking services will be using it in everyday business.
Now, the IBM computer they are working with is a 16 qubits machine. The problem is the areas they are working on will require a machine with 1000s of qubits, maybe millions.
This is why this technology is not ready for prime time. Together with AI, this will revolutionize information technology and general society in ways we can't imagine. But it's not going to be ready for the RV, even if we have to wait another 5 years before we get to exchange.
